Yoga for Anxiety Management

This class will focus on anxiety, what it is, how it works physiologically and ways to reduce and manage it. The primary management tool taught will be Restorative Yoga. Since the majority of people with chronic anxiety benefit most by having a variety of strategies, other tools will be taught as well. We'll work with barriers to slowing down and relaxing. We'll also identify self-talk and thought patterns that tend to increase anxiety, and introduce alternative self-talk strategies that tend to decrease anxiety and promote calmness. We'll look at diet, activity patterns, and life choices that may be influencing anxiety levels, as well.

Class format will include information, active and restorative Yoga practice, some Pranayama (breath practice), and a time for process, sharing, and questions. Participants will be asked to attend all six sessions and the class will be closed to new participants once it has begun. An intake interview with Leslie, the instructor, will be included in the cost, and will be required in order to join this class. Previous experience with yoga is not necessary. Leslie is experienced in teaching people of various levels of ability and is sensitive to concerns or issues that participants may bring. Yoga props will be provided for use during class.

Restorative yoga invites and maximizes the relaxation response. Long, slow, deep, and well-supported poses are used to help the body and the mind to relax. This system was developed orignally by Mr. B.K.S. Iyengar in Pune, India where he used it to treat people for a variety of ailments and injuries. His long time student, Judith Lasater, the author of Relax and Renex: Restful Yoga for Stressful Times was one of the primary teachers to bring it to this country and expand upon it. This is a system that is well-suited to reducing and managing anxiety. Leslie is certified by Judith Lasater as a Relax and Renew Trainer.

Leslie Burgess is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and has been in private practice in Missoula for twenty two years. She has practiced Yoga for twenty five years and taught for five. She is certified by Judith Lasater as a Relax and Renew Trainer. Leslie has offered beginning yoga classes, as well as "Yoga for Round Bodies" and restorative yoga. She brings a sensitivity to her interactions with students and has a gentle and supportive approach. She is excited to be blending her two disciplines by offering this class in Yoga and Anxiety.
