Bugs and Brews: Bacteria, Bugs and Human Health Description:
What happens when you mix after hours access to the Insectarium, local beers, and a fascinating expert lecturer? You get the Missoula Insectarium’s evening lecture series: “Bugs and Brews”!

Wolbachia bacteria infect the cells of most insects and often spread by manipulating host reproduction. Several Wolbachia strains also block viruses and have been used as biocontrol of diseases like dengue and Zika. This month’s speaker, Brandon Cooper, will discuss how Wolbachia infections spread through insects and what it means for human health around the globe.

Brandon Cooper recently joined the faculty of UM as an assistant professor in the biological sciences division. In the fall of 2017 he was awarded a five-year, $1.8 million Outstanding Investigator Award from the National Institutes of Health to continue his research on Wolbachia.
